David Gaider (designer, BGII) did explain in his Ascension readme.txt that part of the reason that some of the game elements were made "easy" was because they did not want to intimidate someone new to the AD&D world by making the game too difficult. If you install the Tactics and Ascension mods into the game, a lot of the encounters are improved, particularly in question the Guild Wars where Aran Livail is made much more powerful.Not really - after all, if wiping out the Shadow Thieves were as easy as BG2 makes it appear, plenty of other groups would have already done it .
