Not really - after all, if wiping out the Shadow Thieves were as easy as BG2 makes it appear, plenty of other groups would have already done it ;).

Disagreed. While it may not break the shadow thieves completely, it'd still screw them over pretty badly. I mean, you suddenly lose an entire city and a whole load of your thieves in it. That's still bound to give the organization a heck of a backlash, even if not a terminal one.

but the leader of the thieves is also in athlika (or at least holds power in it, being a member of the council of 6) so they wouldn't be losing the city.

bhodi's whole purpose of the guild war eludes me...but i guess this isn't the right forum for that.

The Guild war was just Bodhi's way to lead the PC to Irenicus in Spellhold. It didn't matter which side the PC picked since both sides were willing to "help" the PC because of the Guild war.

David Gaider (designer, BGII) did explain in his Ascension readme.txt that part of the reason that some of the game elements were made "easy" was because they did not want to intimidate someone new to the AD&D world by making the game too difficult. If you install the Tactics and Ascension mods into the game, a lot of the encounters are improved, particularly in question the Guild Wars where Aran Livail is made much more powerful.

Hey, you have to teach people that they can't just go around attacking everything or they'll get stomped on. ;)

The assassination of Aran Linvail by the PCs would achieve very little except for making an enemy out of the most powerful thieves' guild on the Sword Coast. Not only is the building you raid not the HQ of the Shadow Thieves (its merely the Shadowhouse, the guild house for assassins, burglers, pickpockets, racketeers, thugs, bounty hunters of the Alandor Sect, which encompasses northern Amn) but Aran Linvail is a Shadowmaster, of which Athkatla alone has 10. Linvail would manage one aspect of the Shadow Thieves operations (likely one of the above mentioned roles seeing as where he lives).

All this information (and much more) can be found 'Lands of Intrigue', a 2E campaign expansion set downloadable at http://www.wizards.c...d/dnd/downloads. It really is a critical accessory for anyone intending to mod for BGII>

Yes, but leave that to the dragons. They'll give a good lesson of don't-attack-this-sleeping-draconic-being ;) .

Oh, they shall learn that you don't go pestering powerful beings without consequences.
