It depends what Global you set. The romances are driven by a number of Globals.
Here is (roughly) a scenario for Valygar's romance - it might be a bit different for TS version (
WeiDU is an expanded variant) - so just see where you are, using the first lines of the LoveTalks:
Valygar_1, 2 and 3 with a few variations: discussion of the Umar Quest and Merella
1 (did not do the UH quest) Valygar: <CHARNAME>, I was wondering if you would allow me to carry Merella?s journal?
(Merella dies) Valygar: Shh? It?s not important? Go in peace, my friend?
(quest done previously, not Ranger-Protector) Valygar: It is my understanding that you have passed through Umar Hills earlier and helped resolve troubles in the area.
Valygar: I see that you have accepted the position of the ranger protector. While I am glad for such an honorable position offered to you, I cannot help but worry about Merella, the previous ranger-protector of Umar Hills.
if conversation #1 occured: <CHARNAME> I feel bad about snapping at you when you asked me about Merella.
Valygar_4 Valygar offers PC his help with a casual adventuring thinggy
