Hi,

Having unsuccessfully searched the net for any sign that someone had managed to install BGT under linux, I decided have another go at doing it myself.

This time, I think that I have succeeded, although testing currently only consists of taking my PC through the quests at Candlekeep and then out into the great unknown. I haven't yet left the first area outside Candlekeep, but everything seems to be working so far.

For those who are interested, here's how I did it. Hopefully I haven't forgotten anything.

I think that it is worth noting that I have done this by myself for my own satisfaction. Don't complain to Ascension64 et al for linux-related issues.

Thanks go to Yacomo (mospack), Westley Weimer & The Bigg (WeiDU), Ascension64 (BGT), King Diamond and anyone else who wrote/worked on any of the utilities that I have mentioned here. Only the bgt-linux package attached is mine and I haven't consolted with any of these people, but I am a firm believer in credit where credit is due.

Required Programs:
dos2unix: some file conversion seemed to have issues with the dos/windows style end-of-line marker

mmv: useful command to handle renames more like the dos rename command. (I don't know how common this command is, I use Gentoo, so I just installed with 'emerge mmv')

mospack: I recompiled this for Linux. Fortunately, the mospack package available on the net includes a unix makefile to build the programs. link

weidu for linux: Available from weidu.org - Note that the default installation uses mixed case in the file names, but my scripts assume the commands are all in lower case. I suppose I should look at updating my programs to work with the correct file names, but in the meantime, either rename WeiDU to weidu or use a simlink.

sed: This is probably standard for every distribution, but I'm listing it here just in case.

sh: I'm only assuming that the bourne shell exists. If it doesn't, I recommend setting up /bin/sh as a simlink to something like /bin/bash.

wine: I've never used Cedega, so I can't comment on how this will work with that.

bgt-linux: This is my contribution to the process. It contains a few shell scripts and sed command files used to alter the installation to work under linux. Please feel free to take anything in this file to use as you wish.

Attached File  bgt_linux.rar   3.99K   1801 downloads

All these files (except those in bgt-linux) should be available in the path.

Process:
Install Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II normally, and patch them as required. If you have problems at this step, I would go to www.winehq.org and check for help there, but I didn't have any problems.

Download and extract BGT into the Baldur's Gate II directory.

Run tolower (part of the weidu for linux package) in both the Baldur's Gate and the Baldur's Gate II directories.

extract bgt-linux into the Baldur's Gate II directory.

run bgt-linux/bgt-linux. With no parameters, this shell script assumes the current directory is the BG2 directory. If it isn't then supply the BG2 directory as the parameter.

The script should create altered copies of a few files and start the installation. When prompted for the BG1 directory, you need the full path name. Using '../<dir>' or '~<userid>/<dir>' doesn't seem to work, although simlinks don't cause any issues.

The final readme will display using less rather than a web browser, because it was easier for me to code.

Put in the Baldur's Gate II CD then run 'wine baldur' - enjoy.

Bits of the process I don't like:
tis2bg2 runs through wine. This shouldn't bother me, because you obviously need wine anyway, but I would prefer to be able to run it natively. It does seem to work without issues, however.

I had major issues when trying to biff the files using weidu for linux. The created .bif files all seemed to be far too small, and didn't seem to have all of the resources in them. I don't know if this was because something that I forgot, or a bug in WeiDU, but I worked around the issue by biffing using the supplied windows weidu executable through wine.

If there are any problems with this process, I can't guarantee that I will have much time to look at them, but post anyway and we'll take it from there.

I wonder if it could be eventually bundled with BGT and somehow recognized from setup-bgt.tp2 to run *.sh instead of *.bat ?

EDIT: Installation went smooth, although it didn't recognize full unix path (from '/') to bg1... now the game freezes when opening world map :|

I can't recreate your problem. Try posting setup-bgtlinux.debug - I'll see if there are any obvious errors. The only thing that I can think of at the moment is that maybe the installation couldn't find all of the necessary utilities (such as mosunpack)

Yes, I didn't copy mosunpack to /usr/bin because I thought mospack was enough  Now I copied all binaries from from mospack and it works. May I ask if you plan to 'fix' other mods under linux, maybe bp-bgt-worldmap?

somehow recognized from setup-bgt.tp2 to run *.sh instead of *.bat ?

I think this could do that:

ACTION_IF ("%WEIDU_OS%" STRING_EQUAL_CASE ~WIN32~) THEN BEGIN // if Windows
  AT_NOW ~Install/script.bat~
  AT_INTERACTIVE_UNINSTALL ~Install/script.bat~
END ELSE BEGIN // Linux
  AT_NOW ~bash bgt-linux/script.sh~
  AT_INTERACTIVE_UNINSTALL ~bash bgt-linux/script.sh~
END

I just got this working. Thanks for your efforts to port this mod to linux!

A couple of caveats:
WeiDu for linux can be found here:
http://forums.gibber...?showtopic=7573

The install will not work unless BG1 directory name is all lower case.
If, like me, you used uppercase letters in your directory name during BG install, you can work around it with lowercase symlinks for each uppercase name.

I get a good way into ./bgt-linux/bgt-linux but eventually my install dies with:
Patching dialog.tlk. Please wait...

Any hints?

Do you have a clean installs of bg1 and bg2? The procedure to be sure of it is:

BG1 installation
- Make a full installation of BG1 and Tales of the Sword Coast
- Should be installed in C:\Games\Baldur's Gate
- Patch it with BioWare’s official ToSC patch v5512
- Start BG1, make your settings, create a character and make a quicksave with Q in Candlekeep
- Quit the game

BG2 installation
- Make a full installation of BG2 and Throne of Bhaal
- Should be installed in C:\Games\BGII - SoA
- Patch it with BioWare’s official ToB patch v26498
- Start BG2 and ToB, make your settings, create a character and after the autosave quit the game

Than BGT installation shouldn't die at all.

This is excellent news ! Thanks a lot !

But I still have some problems (on Ubuntu 9.04, but I had the problem on the previous releases too) :
  • I can't go into the .wine directory using the console; it works with Nautilus, though;
  • Clicking on the install.sh file and at the prompt windows either choosing "launch" or "launch through the console" just does nothing.
These problems are more probably related to my configuration or my distribution rather than to your install file, but the solution may help other Ubuntu users facing the same problem than me.

PS : I'm not a Linux expert, but I begin to understand some basic stuff ! :whistling:

cd ~/.wine does not work? What's the console output of failed command? Besides you don't really need to install it in wine virtual c: drive, but somewhere outside (z: points to '/' root) where you know you can go into in the console.

Thanks for your answer ! Here's the output of the command:
nt@nt:~$ cd ./wine
bash: cd: ./wine: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type

(It says that there's no file of folder of this kind.)

I get the same command if I move the BG folders to a regular folder in my home (an unhidden one), even if I put the "BGII - SoA" and "Baldur's Gate" names lowercase.

I'll try to find at the French Ubuntu forum, but this looks like a serious problem.

Run all the commands from normal user, not using sudo. And if 'ls -al ~ | grep wine' command returns empty output, launch 'winecfg', it should autogenerate ~/.wine staff.

The Ubuntu forum talked about a permission thing.

So, now what's what I have :

nt@nt:~/.wine$ ls -al ~ | grep wine
drwxr-xr-x 4 nt nt 4096 2009-08-06 20:19 .wine

nt@nt:~$ cd /home/nt/.wine
nt@nt:~/.wine$ cd /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Black Isle
bash: cd: /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type
nt@nt:~/.wine$ /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program Files
bash: /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type

I looks that I can't simply access to these folders using the console.

OK, try a command 'chown -R nt ~/.wine/*', it should recursively regain your user ownership of all files within .wine.

Thanks a lot ! The Program Files folder isn't accessible yet, though ! I'll try to ask at the Ubuntu French forums.

Edit : I found a way to the solution on the ubuntu forums (I had to change the keywords), and I did this :

nt@nt:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files$ cd /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Black\ Isle
nt@nt:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Black Isle$ cd /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Black\ Isle/BGII - SoA
bash: cd: /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Black Isle/BGII: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type
nt@nt:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Black Isle$ /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Black\ Isle/BGII\ - SoA
bash: /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Black Isle/BGII -: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type
nt@nt:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Black Isle$ /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Black\ Isle/BGII\ -\ SoA
bash: /home/nt/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Black Isle/BGII - SoA : ceci est un répertoire
nt@nt:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Black Isle$

So now I can go into the "Black Isle" folder, but not inside it.

I'm unable to do the install. I have installed BG from the 5 cds edition, patched it to the 114315 version. Installed totsc and patched it to 5512. Istalled BGII and patched to latest version and then installed Ttob and patched it to 26498. So the games should be in the latest version.

The installation seems to start after I specify the BG location and starts listing files but then aborts.

This is what I get.

I have tried doing a clean reinstallation and doing it all over, but with the same result. The strange thing is that it says it can't find the bg location, but it actually seem to copy some of the files, for if I do the installation twice it ask if I want to replace some of the files from the previous installation.

tis2bg2 runs through wine. This shouldn't bother me, because you obviously need wine anyway, but I would prefer to be able to run it natively. It does seem to work without issues, however.

If you still prefer to be able to run it natively maybe you could compile the "MACOSX" version from the sources:
http://home.comcast....r18/tis2bg2.zip
?

tis2bg2.cpp compiles just fine in LINUX with command:
g++ -O -DMACOSX -o tis2bg2-mac tis2bg2.cpp
:)

dawid@pingwin ~/M/t/tis2bg2> uname
Linux
dawid@pingwin ~/M/t/tis2bg2> ./tis2bg2-mac

[-----------------------------------------------]
[--- BG1->BG2 Area Fileset Converter ---]
[--- ---]
[--- ©KDiamond, Feb 2005, version 1.0 ---]
[-----------------------------------------------]

Usage : tis2bg2 [options] input_area_name output_area_name

Options : -s silent mode
-h save TIS header (for \override\ use)
-d delete input area tileset after conversion
-l write log file (tis2bg2.log)

Examples : tis2bg2 -h AR3300 myfolder1\AR6700
tis2bg2 -l myfolder1\AR3300 myfolder2\AR6700 -s -h -d

This program handles area's .wed, .tis, .mos and .bmp's.
For a complete area conversion .are and .bcs should be provided separately.

P.S. Do you plan to update the install script for 1.08?

tis2bg2 runs through wine.

?

P.S. Do you plan to update the install script for 1.08?

Nugrud:

Thanks for that. I did find a version of tis2bg2 for OSX, but I had trouble getting it to work. It wouldn't load the .wed file (big endain versus little endain maybe?). I don't know if this is the same as the one I tried or a different one.

For 1.08 - I have just reinstalled BGT using the new version and, as expected, it seems to work as it is. The script doesn't include a replacement for the .BAT files, it converts them line-by-line. There are a couple of replacments, but the bulk of the file is just translated.

As long as Ascension64 doesn't add any new types of commands (different options to the copy command or some such) the script will convert whatever is there - add a COPY, add a DEL - the script will just translate them as they are. If the commands are changed to something new, then one of the sed scripts will need to be updated (fixsetup to be exact)

Gaerrent:

I don't know if you are still around, but it according to the output you posted, the script looks like it's extracting the .cre files from the bg2 directory, and not the bg1 directory. Getting the script to correctly process the correct bg1 directory isn't as easy as I would like.

I got around the issue by setting up a symlink, so my bg1 directory is "/home/mike/bg1". If you have trouble, try doing something like that. There may be a better method of reading in the directory so it is more reliable, but that may require someone with a bit more experience with shell scripting to get that to work.

Nah, that's shouldn't happen.
