Hey all,

Seeing as I've never run through BG1 or BG2 just plain ol' vanilla, I was interested in doing that first (with a good party) and then maybe run through the BP-BGT pack after with an evil party to see the difference.

My question then is this:

What mods would you add to a plain vanilla install to maximize the experience, but not change it too drastically? I understand the BG2 Fixpack is something of a necessity, and I would like to go BGT, both for the improved BG1 experience and the continuity of the game. What else should I install? Is there a BG1 equivalent of the BG2 Fixpack, that fixes the bugs in BG1? Are there any cool kitpacks that offer new options in terms of character selection that don't unbalance the game? Are mods like Sword Coast Strategems too much of a change, or simply maximizing what Black Isle already has in place? Etc. etc. etc.

Thanks in advance.

If you want to stay true to the main plot, you'd best be only installing NPC mods that add NPCs to the game and their respective subplots.
If you want several major side plots, you probably should look into various "mega modifications"

If you never played vanilla BG2, I'd advise you to install only BG2 fixpack (or maybe BGT also if you want) and play it=)

Thanks, is there a BG1 equivalent to the BG2 fixpack that addresses the problems / bugs in BG1? I'd imagine I'd want to add that too, and then run BGT over both the fixpacks.

Hmm I think BGT fixes some BG1 issues.
If you want though, you can install the Unfinished Business line of mods for both BG1 and BG2 to fix some more issues and expand on exisiting quests.

BGT have to be installed on pure BG1, so its readme says.
And, if you don't want your game to be too easy, you might want to install Ding0 Experience Fixer, which can be found here: http://www.pocketplane.net/sim/

BGT has its own incorporated BG1 Fixpack written by Ascension64. No external fixpacks (Baldurdash/Dudleyville/ecc.) nor any other BG1 Mods can be installed at all. In the future, when the development of the BG1 Fixpack over at G3's has reached a certain maturity, it might be so that the BGT internal fixpack will be expanded.

Just 2 cents from me:

go for BGT + fixpack.

Don't install NPC Project (as Oldveteran said) 'cause you're going to have problems in BG2 part of the game, unless you're ready to dig and solve manually some problems (with scripting, uninstalling mod, etc...)

I'd add SCS for BGT (but i didn't try it so i don't know if it's buggy), it's add more challange to the game without changing the story.
I'd also install BP to add more challenge in BG2 part of the game as well, but unfortunately Big Picture is really full of bugs ... so i won't suggest to install it unless you're ready to face some strange behaviour (dragons not attacking, wolves who speaks, just the first that comes to my mind but ... there are many actually 'cause it's still in beta stage).

Actually it seems that the current version of BGT has some little bugs (as snares and something minor), if u have i'd install 1.01 version (and not 1.01f) which i actually was playing and was free of bugs ;)

Don't install BGT in the first place. BG1 and BG1 via BGT/TUTU are two drastically different experiences: different engines, different rulesets, screen resolutions, avatars, and so on, and so forth.

Bear in mind that vanilla BG1 NPCs are "silent", while BG2 NPCs talk, comment on the game events, and some of them romance your character. If you want vanilla BG1 experience, I recommend leaving BG1 as is. If you want BG1 to be on BG2 level, install BGT/TUTU and BG1 NPC Project.

The only problem it causes is the cutscene with Jaheira/Khalid not triggering properly in BG2 at the start, other than that its safe to use without conflicts, if your installation order is correct.
That bug will also be fixed in the next version of BG1NPC

Please, contact the developers here at SHS, if you've been experiencing serious thoubles. I cannot give you qualified advice, save uninstalling BG1 NPC Project before the transition, but I am sure the folks who made BGT version can.

There's an updated version of BG1NPC available with hopefully improved BGT compatibility, anyone interested in testing it - contact cmorgan either here or at G3 (see this post for more info). Note that it now requires BGT to be installed first before any other large mods like TS,TDD, etc.

To answer question about SCS in original post - SCS improves tactical challenges throughout the game, in many cases you will have to think carefully to win battles where you could use standard and well-established tactics previously. If you're certain you're going to replay the game afterwards, I'd recommend to try it on your second game - to really feel the difference. ;)

OK, so it sounds like to me that the mods to go for are BG2 Fixpack, BGT and SCS. What would the install order be for these? And what versions am I installing? Weidu? Sorry, still a bit new to all of this BG mod madness.

Thanks.

Oh yes, and DingO's Experience Fixer, as I don't want to just breeze right through due to ramped up XP.

So, what order and versions for these:

BGT
SCS
Ding) Experience Fixer
SCS

Thanks again.

Thanks Ereb,

Is the thief snare issue resolved in that version of BGT, or should I install that as well? If so, where in the install?

Pro5, I have the latest beta Pro5-2 but I did not read anyplace it that BGT was now supposed to go before the other big mods, so i followed the sticky install order (big mods first) then BGT1.02 and then BG1 NPC pack right after. I made changes to various files for compatability but from what you are saying will I have big problems with my current install order? So far so good but I am currently only in BG1. Let me know if you think this is a messed up order.

Why should BGT go before the big mods like TDD now?

You will have the same problems as in previous version, I'm afraid.

This install order with BGT first is needed to ensure BG1NPC always changes correct dialog states. V12-Beta had errors (regardless of install order) in dialog state numbers so that BG2 dialog states or mod-added states were changed instead of BGT ones.

I've discussed the possibilities of removing this install order requirement with cmorgan, but we decided it's too much effort for nothing, because: a) it's very complex thing to do; b) BGT will still work perfectly no matter if it's installed before or after TDD (or other BP family mods).

I mentioned this in the current stickied Erebusant's install thread, here, but I guess it's not easy to find now, sorry.
