For Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Edwin and Viconia :
- If X is in your party, X will be imported (but will be at his/her usual place)
- If X is not in your party but alive in BG1, a new X will be created at his/her usual place
If Jaheira is dead in BG1, there will be no Jaheira in BG2.
If Minsc is dead in BG1, there will be no Minsc in BG2.
If Imoen is dead in BG1, a new Imoen will be created at her usual place.
If Edwin is dead in BG1, a new Edwin will be created at his usual place.
I don't know about Viconia.

I have a different question. What about other BG1 npc? Will they appear in BG2? If I had Xan in my party, would he appear in a cage instead of Jaheira or Minsc?

Damn, I wish I had known this before I let her and Khalid go. I wanted Jaheira to accidentally walk into a fireball cast by Edwin. Accidentally, of course. If Jaheira is dead in BG1, there will be no Jaheira in BG2.
I too would love a rundown of where NPCs will be. I'm sure there's a link about this somewheres... Anyone?
Otherwise, lets expand Anomaly's table for all of the other NPCs:
Ajantis
Alora
Branwen
Coran
Dynaheir
Eldoth
Faldorn
Garrick
Kagain
Khalid
Kivan
Montaron
Safana
Skie
Shar-Teel
Tiax
Quayle
Viconia
Xzar
Xan
Yeslick
Just read horred's and Anomaly's comments on this:
I just double-checked the most recent package; if you have TDD installed, you can also carry over several others. Kivan, Kagain, Montaron, Xzar, and Yeslick. This is fully supported in the BGT parting script, before the transition (ARAM00.bcs).Note *conditionally*. In fact, only Imoen, Minsc, Jaheira, Edwin, Viconia and custom NPCs are imported.
Keep in mind that TDD did next-to-zero dialog/plot development for these PC's, and still hasn't to date. So, you have to decide if this is worth it, for yourself.
Another question I had about importing is if the NPCs keep the equipment they had in BG1; horred reports they will not, but they should have the same stats, skills, etc.

Mods NPCs (except those who are handled specifically) and PCs created in multiplayer are imported.
Of course everybody looses their equipment... Edwin do not loose his amulet though, and Imoen gets a new belt.

FYI- This will create a new Xan, whether or not he died in BG1.http://www.pocketplane.net/xanIf I had Xan in my party, would he appear in a cage instead of Jaheira or Minsc?
I've modifed the BGT parting script (ARAM00.bcs) so that old/current Xan will move to the same place that the Xan-mod would place him, but only if he is not dead in BG1. Since I cannot test this yet, who wants to check if my alterations are correct?
(Might just do this for some other NPCs. Alora, ooo baby...)
BTW it looks like only members who were in your party at time of transition will lose their gear; anyone else who moves to a new area will keep their sh--, um, junk! Is this correct? Yay?!

What is the point?
(I am genuinely curious, by the way. What would that accomplish?)

Another benefit of keeping your NPCs is if you have BG1NPC installed - if there is still some dialogue which NPCs haven't done yet in BG1, they'll get a chance in BG2.
The changes needed are not difficult, but I'm not displaying the code here because I need an experienced modder/coder to check if the changes are correct. Chev, I'm assuming you are such a person.
I also hope that if it works properly, maybe we can get an official transition option.
Maybe this'll encourage folks to expand the NPC dialogues into BG2.
